A plug in thermostat is an electrical device. It can do the job of both- an electrical outlet adapter as well as a temperature sensor. It basically reads the temperature for activating a power switch to turn on and off the portable heaters in the changing environmental conditions.
It is mainly a small device that has a three-prong power adapter for use with the standard electrical outlets. It enables safe and efficient operation of different heaters like oil filled, radiant or fan and conductor heaters.
The best part about this device is that it will activate/deactivate the appliances plugged into them when the temperature of the room reaches a specific threshold. Some of the units have more than a receptacle for accommodating the operation of different appliances.
These components enable the users to take protection against the heating system failures by activating a portable heater in conditions of cold temperatures, or they may be used with tank heaters, heat lamps, or engine block heaters in marinas and garages. They can also be linked with strobes or lights for creating a highly visible, instantly recognizable freeze warning.
The larger units can be designed in a mountable housing with the programmable sensitivities for activating custom temperature ranges. These components are usually rated for the higher power conditions in order to be compatible with different brands of space heaters, fans and HVAC installations. The midsized devices have electronic readouts, which display the temperatures with the digital alphanumerics. They also have an onboard battery power system that enable adjustments at the outside portion of the main socket. Sometimes the batteries are rechargeable.
A plug in thermostat generally provides versatility for preparations against the acute temperature variations without having to rely on the more costly installations or equipments. The device basically detects temperatures to activate the automation responses from the different electrical equipments.
Some of these electrical devices can be plugged directly into the wall outlet whereas others may have a connecting extension cord with a simple knob operation. When a programmed temperature causes the device to activate, it kicks on the heat and turns off on its own after reaching the desired temperature. This kind of device is very useful and offers more comfortable and controllable environmental conditions for the users.
When operating a plug in thermostat, there are several measures that the users need to keep in mind. For instance, the temperature sensors are not meant to be placed in direct sunlight or near any heating unit. Unattended heating units can present an electrical or fire hazard. The smaller plug in thermostats are for limited use. They should never be used with a powerful electrical equipment like an air conditioner.
